Abstract

Trends in urbanization in developed countries over the past four decades are analyzed. "Particular attention is given to the process of counterurbanization, and the recent reversal of this population trend has been highlighted. The recent developments in the fortunes of cities also entail a need for new classifications. These are obviously necessary in order to analyze the restructuring of the economic base and to foresee the emergence of new social categories on labour and housing markets in urban regions."
