Abstract

AbstractThis note identifies a new portrait type of Faustina the Younger, which appears on medallions and on a single aureus. On medallions the type appears in a single, closely die-linked group, indicating a synchronous emission. I suggest that this emission should be placed in a prominent gap in the (dated) medallion issues of Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius, which in turn dates this newly identified portrait of Faustina to 153/4 CE.
