Abstract

In north-eastern Tanzania there are three large isolated mountain blocks, the Usambara, Uluguru, and Nguru Mts (White 1983). The flora of the smallest of these, the Nguru Mts. of Morogoro District, is the least known. Whilst the floras of the three massifs have much in common, each can boast a number of endemics. In recent years several novelties in the Orchidaceae have been discovered in the Ngurus including the endemic terrestrial Thulinia albolutea Cribb (Cribb, 1984) and the epiphytic Angraecopsis nguruensis Cribb (Cribb, 1989). Thulinia, so far, is a monotypic genus endemic to this massif. Amongst a small collection of orchids and other plants sent to Kew for identification recently by Tamas P6cs of Eger College in Hungary was an undescribed species of Polystachya in section Caulescentes.
