Abstract
In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Carasso etal. survey invertible DNA sites in Bacteroidales from patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and healthy control individuals. They identify complex functional interactions between Bacteroides fragilis, an invertible promoter, a capsular polysaccharide, a bacteriophage, and the human host. The establishment of 'omics approaches to characterizing genomic targets and functional roles is still required.
