Abstract

The nonlinear dynamics of irregular structures is influenced by both local and global torsional effects. In order to capture the inelastic structural response, the concept of plastic hinges is one of the most used tools due to its numerical efficiency. However, the combined effect of bending and torsion into the inelastic domain is scarcely illustrated in literature. In this paper, the recently developed 3D Force Analogy Method is augmented with an algorithm to consider axial force – biaxial bending moment –torque interaction. A structure having both plan and elevation irregularities is considered as a case study to illustrate the benefits of the proposed algorithm. The structural control concept is further implemented in the attempt to improve structural performance of irregular structures. A non-commercial Matlab/Simulink code is developed for the scopes of this paper.
