Abstract

A new performance index for the computer aided design of control systems is developed. The index is structured to force the design of the control systems into a region of the design space relating to acceptable system specification: The design process converges to a feasible region in which all of the performance requirements have been satisfied. The performance specification index was developed specifically for systems requiring a steady state response after a given time interval. The CAD process utilizes the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell Optimization Method in conjunction with State Transition and Runge-Kutta-Merson simulation techniques to obtain discrete and continuous time system designs, respectively. The procedure determines DDC and PID parameters by minimizing specified performance violations. Examples of the discrete and continuous time system performance specification designs are compared with conventional ISE design results.
