Abstract

The article reports that gerontologists have identified an antiaging compound that may regulate the aging process in humans delaying the onset of age-related diseases such as diabetes. A chemical named rapamycin, discovered in soil from Easter Island by professor Stanley Skoryna and his team, has been shown to extend the life span of laboratory mice by inhibiting the activity of a protein identified as mammalian TOR. The potential benefits to preventive medicine include the development of new drugs to target diseases such as Alzheimer's, though potential side effects include anemia, increased blood cholesterol, and wound healing. INSET: The Making of Supermice.
