Abstract

A new azido-nickel(II) one-dimensional (1D) compound of [Ni(phen)(N 3) 2] n (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) was prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurement. Its structure consists of nickel chains in which the nickel(II) ions are alternatively bridged by double end-on and double end-to-end azido bridges. The nickel(II) ions have a distorted octahedral environment, completed by the two nitrogen atoms of the phen ligand. The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility of the title compound has been investigated in the temperature range 4–300 K and revealed alternating antiferromagnetic ( J AF=−4.77 cm −1) and ferromagnetic ( J F=+28.08 cm −1) interactions.
