Abstract

In a collection of aquatic insects sent to me from China by Dr. Suenson, I find a single pair of an undescribed species of backswimmer. It represents a smaller and more slender species than one is accustomed to see from the orient. At first glance it reminds one of Notonecta lactitans Kirk., a species which lives in South Africa. It is, however, larger and structurally quite different. From China one expects to see handsome, red and black species as large, or larger, than our North American Notonecta irrorata Uhler. This new species is pale in color and the male is but a trifle broader than our common Notonecta undulata Say. Its greater length makes it a relatively more slender species than any save Notonecta lactitans Kirkaldy.
