Abstract

A new method for measuring the ionosphere plasma autocorrelation function with an incoherent scatter radar is described. This method can be used in similar situations where multipulse methods have been used previously. In situations where the design of the transmitted signal is limited by a maximum allowed modulation time and a maximum radar peak power and where the signal to noise ratio is small, this method provides significantly more accurate ACF estimates than can be obtained by frequency commutated multiple pulse measurements. A simple explanation of the method is given, as well as a precise definition based on ambiguity functions. Computational algorithms are discussed, and it is shown that there are several possibilities to modify present algorithms so that this method can be implemented.
