Abstract

A new microwave modification of a free-electron laser (FEL) with a small-aperture long-focus open resonator (OR) for the positive feedback of the oscillator is suggested. The OR electromagnetic properties were studied in the “cool” regime by means of the original, specially developed method with a Sommerfeld line for the OR excitation. The spectral characteristics and performance of the 2 mm FEL are presented. The radiation power of the modified FEL is shown to be twice as large as the radiation power of the basic FEL. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 23: 188–192, 1999.
