Abstract
Observations of nucleate boiling in a glass pipe lead to a new interpretation of the superheated state at the heating wall. The constitutive law of heat transfer based on the laws of non-equilibrium thermodynamics is presented to build a new foundation to Thom's empirical correlation. An analytical result of the DNB wall superheating is deduced from a balance of momentum which serves as a proof that DNB is governed by a sonic limit for the evaporation.
