Abstract

We developed a new method for phthalate exposure assessment that uses glucuronidase digestion of urine, solid‐phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to analyze eight mono‐esters of phthalates (1, 2). The mono‐esters, one of the primary human metabolites of phthalate diesters, are monitored to avoid the ubiquitous background contamination of phthalate diesters. This method is sufficiently sensitive to measure urinary levels in non‐occupationally exposed humans.
