Abstract

ABSTRACT A new method named thermogravimetric calibration curve method was developed in this study using thermogravimetric analysis to determine Ru activity (a Ru) in Ru-containing alloys. This was achieved by using (1) the kinetic relationship between the oxidative evaporation rate of the Ru atom (v Ru) and overall vapor pressures of various RuO x gases () in the chamber of a commercial thermogravimetric analyzer and (2) the thermodynamic relationship between and a Ru in alloys. The experimental results showed that v Ru from experimental powders was approximately proportional to the P RuOx over powders. By using their specific quantitative relationship, namely, the calibration curves for v Ru versus P RuOx, we determined the a Ru in Ru0.5Pd0.5 alloy in the temperature range from 1523 to 1673 K. The measured values of a Ru agreed well with those calculated by using the Calphad method.
