Abstract

A novel experimental technique for the measurement of the nonlinear refractive index coefficient,n2, based on the detection of self-phase modulation phase shift by means of an all-fiber Sagnac interferometer, is proposed. Measurements performed on dispersion-shifted fibers clearly indicate that the value ofn2at 1550 nm is around 2.5 × 10−20m2/W, considerably lower than in the visible wavelength range.
