Abstract

In Nd isotope analysis, single-filament NdO + and triple-filament Nd + ion generation in solid-source mass spectrometers can be replaced with single Re filament Nd + analysis, using platiniferous carbon to accomplish in situ reduction of Nd at temperatures of 1350–1550°C. This method gives the simplicity of single-filament operation without the necessity for oxide corrections. As little as 50 ng of Nd can be analysed with a precision of ± 0.0022%. Loading of the filament is straightforward, and the resulting loads are relatively robust during handling and thermal cycling.
