Abstract

A number of methods for sampling plants in frozen soil were evaluated. A new method using a portable gas-powered, concrete cut-off saw equipped with a carborundum disc was the most satisfactory. The saw was capable of cutting hard-frozen soil having a high content of sand and stones to a depth of 12 cm at a speed of about 1 m/min. The extraction of one hard-frozen hexahedral soil sample was completed by one man within 5 min.
