Abstract

The production of the negatively charged helium dimer He 2 − can be enhanced by nearly an order of magnitude by utilizing laser excited alkali metal as charge-exchange material for fast He 2 + ions. The enhancement can be attributed to both steps in the charge-exchange reactions converting He 2 + via He 2 (a 3 Σ u +) to He 2 − ( 4Π g) .
