Abstract

Formation of a new metastable phase, Nb5Fe33B10, during crystallization of amorphous Nb10Fe70B20 melt-spun ribbons was disclosed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Atomic positions in the Nb5Fe33B10 phase formed at the second stage of crystallization were determined by Rietveld profile refinement of X-ray powder diffraction pattern. The phase relates to a new type structure close to Cr23C6. It has a body-centered tetragonal lattice with 96 atoms, space group I4mm, and lattice parameters a = 7.640 Å and c = 17.498 Å. Long-term annealing at 800C led to decomposition of this phase, starting in 4 h and accomplishing in 20 h of heat treatment.
