Abstract

This paper proposes a new mechanics model and a semi-analytical method to solve the problem of a thin strip on an elastic foundation stamped by an elliptical rigid punch. The strip was divided into three parts according to its contact with the punch and foundation. Analytical solutions were derived individually for each part using the theories of contact mechanics and strip bending with large deflection. A numerical algorithm was then developed to obtain the interface forces through an iteration by considering the compatibility conditions of deformation between the neighbouring parts of the strip. The main advantages of the present method are that it relies on fewer assumptions, is with clear mechanics meaning throughout the analysis, and makes the calculation more efficient.
