Abstract

Ever-higher exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates are necessary to achieve the stringent pollutant limits of the forthcoming Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards. For this purpose the exhaust gas mass flow and its temperature must be controlled. Both factors are dependent on engine speed and load, ambient temperature and other engine conditions. Behr Thermot-tronik developed the “Mass and Temperature Control” (MTC) EGR valve, that combines previously separated mass flow and temperature control. This results in reduced packaging space, less weight and lower costs, including manufacturer’s assembly costs. Furthermore, higher recirculation rates are achieved due to a lower pressure drop.
