Abstract

Vertebrate fossils from clastic rocks of the Peel Sound Formation on north-central Prince of Wales Island indicate that rocks as young as Emsian may be present, contrary to the statement of Ormiston (1969) that Siegenian to Emsian carbonate sediments on northwestern Prince of Wales are the youngest rocks present on the island. A revised cross-section through northern Prince of Wales shows Ormiston's carbonates as a facies variation of the Peel Sound Formation, which rests on the underlying Read Bay Formation with a generally gradational contact, not a regional unconformity.
