Abstract

We find that national concentration of daily newspaper chains, movie theater operators, and multiple cable television system operators has increased since 1977, while concentration of broadcast television station groups has slightly declined. Although efficiency advantages of chain operations have probably increased, we employ a “public good” model to argue that accumulation of bargaining power with product suppliers may also be an economic motive for recent chain growth, particularly in the cable television industry.
