Abstract

As currently understood, Liparis is a cosmopolitan genus of some 350 species, particularly well represented in tropical Asia, the Malay Archipelago, the Philippines, New Guinea, Australia and the SW Pacific Islands. Cribb & Whistler (1996) reported five species from the Samoan Archipelago, only L. phyllocardia Schltr. from Savai'i being endemic to the archipelago. A second endemic species, L. alavensis, recently collected on Tutuila by one of the authors (WAW), is now described. It is quite distinct from all other Samoan species and from those of other archipelagos in the SW Pacific.
