Abstract

With global warming, weather conditions have brought great threats on the highway transportation system, therefore, the transport sector has paid more and more attention to monitoring and early warning on highway meteorological conditions, in which the construction of road weather information systems (RWIS) observation station is the core and basis. This paper proposes a new layout method of RWIS stations in the highway networks. Firstly, the technical characteristics and defects of the conventional highway RWIS station layout principles and methods were analyzed. Secondly, based on the historical data, which was from the meteorological sector, on the occurrence frequency of different adverse weather condition in different regions in China, affect grades of various adverse weather conditions had been proposed. Thirdly, based on the historical data, which was from the transport sector, on the traffic volume of highway network in different regions in China, affect grades of various adverse weather conditions had been adjusted and modified. Finally, a new layout method of RWIS station in highway networks had been proposed, and a demonstration had been done along an expressway to verify the effectiveness of the new RWIS layout method.
