Abstract

A new apparatus for the chemical reaction of cotton and other cellulosic yarns with organic reagents at elevated temperatures has been constructed and tested. The device, made entirely' of chemically resistant materials, supports a loosely wound yarn package while reagents are pumped through it. A key feature of the apparatus is a special Tefion tube which supports the yarn and which can contract substantially during the reaction. The tube allows for contraction of the yarn, better permeability of reagents, and uni formity of substitution. Use of the apparatus yields yarn that is in a form suitable for textile evaluation.
