Abstract

A new concept of magneto-optical display is proposed. As for the bubble-based ones, magnetic layers with the easy axis normal to the plane are required. However, the magnetization is made to be so low that the spontaneous formation of strip domains is suppressed, and domains over a wide range of sizes can be arbitrarily shaped by external fields to reproduce, for instance, letters or figures. These domain patterns are permanent in zero field, and are visualized by means of the Faraday effect. The basic feasibility of such a device is demonstrated by our results on nominal Er 2Eu 1Fe 3.7Ga 1.3O 12 layers epitaxially grown on GGG substrates. Wide possibilities exist of greatly improving the display performances by tailoring, as done for bubble devices, ad hoc garnet compositions.
