Abstract

Initial access (IA) is the process that a user equipment (UE) establishes initial connection to the base station (BS). In 5G new radio (NR), millimeter wave (mmWave) bands and directional beamforming (BF) are introduced. Hence, the IA process need to provide a beam search mechanism by which the BS and UE can determine their respective initial BF directions for subsequent directional communications. In particular, initial beam search can significantly delay the IA process, which goes against the ultra-low latency feature in the NR network. This article proposes two new initial beam search schemes — dynamic single-side iterative search and hybrid dynamic iterative search. We campare the delay performance of these two new proposals and the exhaustive search.
