Abstract

The development of implantable telemeters for measurement of arterial blood pressure (BP) and sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) in conscious rabbits and rats is presented. These devices incorporate a high gain amplifier for SNA recording. The SNA signal is digitized with 12‐bit resolution and sampled at 8 kHz. Arterial BP is measured (sampled at 500 Hz) by inserting a fluid filled catheter, that is coupled to a pressure sensor, into the aorta. The pressure signal is corrected for atmospheric pressure variations in the wireless receiver situated up to 5 m away. The total implant weight is 14 gm and suitable for implantation in animals over 200 gm. Digital transmission of the signals permits co‐housing of animals without crosstalk. The transmitter is recharged whilst implanted using novel inductive power transfer technology. This effectively allows continuous lifetime monitoring without need for battery refurbishment. The device was implanted into a group of 5 rats and 5 rabbits and provided good quality recordings of SNA and BP during a range of physiological stimuli (baroreflex, chemoreflex, nasopharyngeal). We propose that this technology provides new avenues for exploring the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the development of cardiovascular diseases.
