Abstract

In order to improve the convergent speed of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm in the control of real-time polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation, we apply a new gradient method to PSO algorithm in this paper. We call this new algorithm GTPSO. To compare the convergent speed of PSO and GTPSO algorithm, a test is carried out by searching for the best degree of polarization (DOP) in the data table which we achieved from the experiment of PMD compensation. The simulation results show that the proposed method improves the convergent speed of PSO algorithm effectively. As a result, we get the conclusion that GTPSO is a better method for real-time PMD compensation.
