Abstract

A new cichlid, Iranocichla hormuzensis, is described from Iranian waters draining to the Persian Gulf at the Straits of Hormuz. The new species is endemic to southern Iran. It is suggested that the closest relatives of Iranocichla are members of Tristramella of the Levant Rift Valley. Iranocichla is an inhabitant of small streams and rivers characterised by high temperatures and salinities. The absence of cichlids from the Arabian Peninsula and the Tigris-Euphrates basin is attributed to a combination of desiccation and limiting temperature conditions.
