Abstract

In order to provide versatile resource-rich internetworked personal communications services (PCS), the future global personal communication networks (PCN) will not only be digital mobile wireless networks, but also include wired ATM-based BISDN, as the backbone, together with other types of networks. The purpose of this paper has two parts. The first is to conduct a detailed analysis and comparison of the currently wide-used, open-operated Sun ONC Secure RPC with our proposed generalized mechanism of secure internetworked information service creation to show that performance of our mechanism is better in some aspects. The comparison has been conducted in four aspects which include the general architecture, protocols, security measures on authentication protocols, and performance with activity frequency analysis and load index. It has been found that our security is better than Sun's system, and the overhead of the Sun secure RPC calling activity is larger than that of ours. The second part is to further apply object-oriented technology to the design of our proposed generalized mechanism on the SunOS basic environment in order to have real operations. The results on the last two aspects are documented.
