Abstract

Curvularia lunata, a causal agent of Curvularia leaf spot of maize, was shown to produce a toxin in vitro and in planta based on TLC and HPLC-MS analyses. The purified toxin was able to induce symptoms on maize plants similar to those of natural infection. The toxin was identified as methyl 5-(hydroxymethyl) furan-2-carboxylate through UV, ESI-MS, FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, and 13 C-NMR spectral analyses. Host specificity tests showed that this toxin was non-host specific. This is the first report on the chemical structure of a toxin produced by the pathogen that causes Curvularia leaf spot on maize.
