Abstract

Current climate-based daylighting metrics have limited applicability for residential use cases and fail to highlight relevant aspects of natural light in residential spaces, such as diurnal and seasonal availability of daylight and access to direct sunlight. This paper proposes a new climatebased, annual evaluation framework that quantifies daylight autonomy and access to direct light in diurnal and seasonal bins for temperate and cold climates. Spatial maps, as well as apartment scores, can be computed. Rigorous testing at various architectural scales highlights the usefulness and sensitivity of the introduced framework.
