Abstract

A new fossil ictalurid catfish, Ictalurus (Amiurus) hazenensis, is described from the Middle Member of the Truckee Formation, a diatomite deposit of Miocene age. The single specimen known consists of the complete skeletal remains of the anterior portion of the fish to the twelfth vertebra. In addition to possessing the advanced osteological features of the subgenus Amiurus, the specimen shares derived features of members of the natalis species group. Features considered derived relative to the rest of the natalis species group are the broad skull roof at the level of the epiphyseal bar, the opercle slightly narrowed and the angle between the dorsal and anterior edges 1100. Ictalurus hazenensis appears to be the sister group of the three extant members of the natalis species group. The specimen is important zoogeographically as it occurs outside the present range of the Ictaluridae and is the only fossil catfish known from Nevada.
