Abstract

A new formula for the nuclear level density is derived without the use of the saddle-point approximation. The dependence of the level density on the finite dimension of the vector space is explicitly seen. The effect of the neglect of higher moments of the level-density distribution in the saddle-point method is observed at low temperature.
