Abstract

We describe the use of Medizip (Nycomed Pharma GmbH, Ismaning, Germany), a new form of noninvasive skin closure system, in urological procedures. In July and August 2002 after radical prostatectomy or suprapubic prostatic enucleation 12 patients underwent noninvasive skin closure with a Medizip surgical zipper. The wound was inspected days 3 and 8, and 6 weeks postoperatively. No wound complication occurred, such as infection or separation. In 2 patients 2 and 3 mm. wound dehiscence developed, respectively. The zipper was routinely removed on day 8 after surgery. All patients were satisfied with cosmesis and rated the surgical zipper agreeable to wear. The Medizip surgical zipper is a safe, cosmetically satisfactory, cost-effective and time sparing alternative to conventional suture material for skin closure.
