Abstract

A new formulation for the ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) equations describing a compressible fluid flow in terms of a moving mesh system is presented. An important consequence of this formulation is the elimination of all terms involving grid dilatation. For finite element calculation of compressible flows with shocks, SUPG (Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin) type stabilization (i.e. artificial viscosity) terms are derived for the first time for this class of problem. This approach has led to a highly robust computational method for the treatment of multi-body fluid mechanics.
