Abstract

The infrastructure of future wireless networks will be based on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks which accommodate various multimedia services. To support seamless, fast handoffs in such an environment, we propose a fast handoff management scheme using permanent virtual connections (PVCs) reserved between neighboring base stations. We analytically calculate the handoff blocking probability for the given PVC bandwidth. Based on the analytical results, we compare our scheme with Acampora's virtual connection tree method from the point of the bandwidth required for fast handoffs. The proposed scheme results in significant saving of wired link resources, compared with those of Acampora's (see IEEE J. Select. Areas Commun., vol.12, p.1365-75, 1994) approach. In addition, it maintains the local cell sequence integrity during handoffs.
