Abstract

We found a new family of non-diffracting Laguerre beams, which are constructed by the associated Laguerre polynomials and trigonometric functions, and described by different radial mode numbers and negative topological charges. Surprisingly, the description with negative topological charges is very different from the description of the general non-diffracting Laguerre beams with positive topological charges. The evolution laws for the new family of non-diffracting beams with the negative topological charges is depicted graphically, and the excitation mechanism of this new family is revealed, which might be helpful in improving the understanding of two-dimensional non-diffracting solutions of the paraxial wave equation.
