Abstract

A new model based upon the electronic 3d-band structure of ferromagnetic metals has been proposed for an explanation of the anomalous properties of defects in pure iron introduced by a low temperature electron or fast neutron irradiation. The abnormally high migration temperature of interstitials was explained by considering the atomic-level character of 3d-band electrons. The anomalously low migration temperature of vacancies in iron was also explained by using the same model.
