Abstract

A brief history of electric arc furnace design and the advancements of the I9609s which have revolutionized the melting capabilities in the steel industry is reviewed. Technological improvements in powering, electric circuit design and operating characteristics are discussed using actual operating data taken from existing arc furnace installations. It is pointed out that the modern design concept which led to UHP production of 100 tph from scrap charges is of even greater importance with the advent of continuous charging of pre-reduced materials and prepared scrap.
