Abstract

Through a careful heat treatment of an Er 3+-doped ZrF 4-based fluoride glass a transparent vitroceramic is obtained with the particular property of having the Er 3+ active ion only within the single microcrystalline phase. This allows to encompass a new type of optical amplification medium with emission cross-section increased by 100% showing crystal-like inhomogeneous line width.
