Abstract

At the present time, the accuracy of measurements in 4He ion applications is limited by the accuracy of tabulated stopping powers for which it is difficult to assign errors. In this work, empirical formulae, which generate stopping powers of solids for 5.486 and 8.78 MeV 4He ions, have been derived in terms of both ion energy and absorber atomic number Z. These stopping power values can be used as such and will also help in evaluating the accuracy of semiempirical tabulations. Our results, with estimated accuracies of ± 1.4–4% and ± 2–3% for 5.486 and 8.78 MeV 4 He ions , respectively, are compared with semiempirical tabulations and with other recent measurements.
