Abstract

Fengzao? is an early-ripening cultivar selected from the bud mutations of ?Kyoho?. The botanical and biological characteristics were investigated for nearly ten years. It was propagated by cutting and grafting continuously. The results showed that the early-ripening trait is very stable and there are some minor differences in botanical characters and biological characteristics between the bud mutation cultivars and the parents. Moreover, the most significant variation is the berry ripening time. The berry of ?Fengzao? matured in early July in Luoyang, while for the berry of ?Kyoho?, it ripens in the middle of August. The fruit developing period of ?Fengzao? is 36 d shorter than ?Kyoho?. The change of berry early-ripening trait of ?Fengzao? is very dramatic and it is a valuable early ripening grape cultivar for the grape industry.
