A murine identified as Paraethomys aff. abaigari has been repeatedly recognized in several early Pliocene localities of the Iberian Peninsula
We have revised these occurrences, as well as other samples of similar morphology, and propose that all these records correspond to a new species
The new species differs from other European representatives of the genus Paraethomys mainly in its size, which is intermediate between that of the small-sized Paraethomys meini and the large-sized Paraethomys abaigari
Summary
Abaigari has been repeatedly recognized in several early Pliocene localities of the Iberian Peninsula. We have revised these occurrences, as well as other samples of similar morphology, and propose that all these records correspond to a new species. Based on a large sample from the early Ruscinian site of Baza-1 (Guadix-Baza Basin, Spain).
