Abstract

Many distance measures have been proposed in in the literature for vague sets, some of those measures cannot satisfy the axioms of distance or provide counterintuitive cases. For certain situations using these distance measures, analysis reveal them incapable of discriminating between vague sets. Thus, the author propose a new distance measure to overcome the limitations of existing distance measures and apply it to a group multi-criteria decision making problem using Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. The new distance measure not only satisfies the axioms of distance measure, but also overcomes the counterintuitive cases. It appears thus to be a useful new distance measure between vague sets. A numerical example, as presented, augers well for practical adoption of the proposed distance measure for handling MCDM problem using TOPSIS method.
