Abstract

1 Contributions from School of Forestry, Yale University, No. I3. Since the preparation of this paper, the following article has come to our attention. Cuif, M. E.: Influence du couvert de la Foret sur la temperature du sol a diverses profondeurs (Bul. de la Societe des sciences, Series 3, pp. 5i-65, Paris, i909). Cuif used soil wells one meter on a side and one meter deep with one vertical wall faced with boards. Small holes were drilled in these boards at the depths at which soil temperatures were taken and small tunnels made in the soil parallel with the surface at the points where the holes were drilled. Current thermometers were inserted therein with corks attached to plug the holes when the instruments were in place. The tunnels were only a few inches in length and maximum and minimum thermometers were not used. I7'
