Abstract

A new device is described for extracting living invertebrates from large samples of leaf litter. Tests of the extractor with organisms introduced into litter showed that it was between 7 and 96% efficient. Tests with freshly collected litter resulted in efficiencies between 50 and 100%. Taxa that inhabit nests or cavities (ants, lepidoptera larva) within the litter were extracted poorly. Many taxon-types can be efficiently and cheaply collected alive.
