Abstract

Conventional dc-dc boost converters can’t be operated with a duty ratio more than 85%, due to reverse recovery problems of the boost diode and huge conduction losses in active and passive elements. Therefore, any voltage gain beyond 6.7 can’t be practically achieved with conventional dc-dc boost converters. Connection of two or more boost converters in cascade can help in achieving high voltage gain but at the cost of large conduction and switching loss due to two stage power conversion. In this paper, a new boost converter with very high gain is proposed for the applications necessitating high step-up of dc voltage level. The proposed topology can provide extremely large step-up voltage gain, although it uses only one switch like classical boost converters. Performance of this converter has been verified through computer simulation using MATLAB/simulink and behavior of the converter is found to confirm the theoretical analysis.
